Notes from the 4/21 Economic Development Committee Meeting

April 21, 2016

The April 21st Economic Development Committee Meeting included a lot of great information, including: 1) Presentation on Small Business Credit Survey by Brian Clarke from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, 2) Presentation on City of Boston Small Business Plan by Rafael Carbonell, and 3) Information on the Anchor Institution Mapping Inquiry Project.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, June 9th at Interise, 197 Portland Street, Boston, MA. This will be our last meeting before we take a short break over the summer.

The April 19th Mortgage Lending Committee Meeting included a lot of great information, including: 1) Presentation on Appraisals by Steve Sousa, MBREA, and Rich Goulet, MRA, 2) Delinquency and Foreclosure Reports from MHP and MassHousing for the quarter ending 12/31/15, and 3) Lots of great events and meetings coming up at our partner organizations.

Our next Mortgage Lending Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 7 at 9:00 AM at MHP, 160 Federal Street, 2nd Floor, Boston. This will be our last meeting before we take a short break over the summer.

MCBC Attends National Community Reinvestment Coalition Annual Conference

MCBC Executive Director Dana LeWinter traveled to DC for the National Community Reinvestment Coalition’s Annual Conference from March 16-18. Celebrating 25 Years in 2016, this year’s NCRC Annual Meeting was titled “Creating a Just Economy” and included 3 days of trainings and events focused on just that. Workshops were focused around several tracks, including “Access to Credit, Capital and Banking Services”, “Housing” and “Business Development”.

People’s United Bank’s Reality Check for Danvers High School Seniors

On March 14th, 250 seniors from Danvers High School participated in People’s United Bank’s annual Reality Check program. This is a program designed to prepare high school seniors for life beyond the classroom. The financial literacy program gives the students a hands-on lesson on the basics of budgeting.

MCBC Hosts Forum on Changing Patterns XXII

February 23, 2016

In its annual report on mortgage lending patterns, Changing Patterns, the Massachusetts Community & Banking Council (MCBC) highlights differences among lending patterns by race, income, and community. The report shows that in 2014, blacks in Boston made up 21.0% of households, but received only 3.6% of loans, while Latinos made up 13.7% of households and received 4.0% of loans. In Greater Boston, blacks were 7.3% of households and received 2.0% of loans, while Latinos were 6.8% of households and received 3.2% of loans.

Announcing 2016 Basic Banking for Massachusetts Participants

Basic Banking for Massachusetts was launched in 1994 as a voluntary program to expand access to bank products and services and to encourage those with modest incomes to establish banking relationships. The guidelines were developed jointly by community and bank representatives. This year, 92 financial institutions are participating in the Basic Banking for Massachusetts program. MCBC Releases Small Business Lending Report 2014

MCBC announces the release of Small Business Lending in Massachusetts, 2007-2013. The report, the seventeenth in a series, reviews recent small business lending trends across the state with an emphasis on traditionally underserved areas. The report also reviews changes in economic conditions and other factors that affect small business lending. The report was prepared for MCBC by Stuart Ryan of BankMaps LLC.
